Öl-Kontrollleuchten-Check

The oil indicator light turns on while driving and you do not know exactly how to react?

Alexander from the ClassicCentrale explained it to us in the magazine Oldtimer Praxis.

He also uses our 18.000mAh jump start with enthusiasm!

The proper function of the oil supply is very important
, since the engine oil reduces friction of the moving engine parts and reduce the wear.
At the same time oil results in the circuit between the oil sump and cylinder head heat from serving as a gas seal in the cylinders and protects against corrosion.

Material: manometer set, wrench, workshop manual

Basic checks:

+ Check the oil level with a dipstick - Dipstick dry?

+ Is the oil drain plug in place? Pressed or screwed plugs seal the main oil channel. If pressure drops, they can be pressed out.

+ Which thread has the oil pressure switch? Straight or conical?

+ The oil pressure setpoint, when the engine is warm, is given in the relevant workshop manual.

Pressure drop or just a defective sensor?

+ Is the oil pressure control lit while the engine is running? Stop immediately! Test: Disconnect the plug from the oil pressure switch. If the light stays on, the cable may have a short circuit to ground and the display may be defective.

+ Test with compressed air and multimeter to see if the pressure switch reacts: Disconnect the cables at the transmitter and hold briefly against the mass. The pointer must be fully deflected, otherwise the line or display is defective.

+ Unscrew the sensor from the block and turn the engine without ignition (remove the spark plugs first) with the starter. If oil shoots out of the threaded hole, the display is probably defective.

+ If you are connected to the main oil channel via copper pipes or hoses and it spits oil when opening the port, even though the pointer was at zero, the instrument is defective.

Pump check

There is a pressure relief valve in the line on the pump, which allows some of the oil to be returned to the sump. If the oil pressure rises, seals and pump can be destroyed.

+ See if oil is pumped and it arrives in the cylinder head (again at starter speed and removed candles).

+ Check the oil pressure with a pressure gauge.

If the circuit suffers, it may be due to the spring-loaded pressure relief valve. The valve opens too early, when it jammed in the open position or the spring is broken. In the workshop manual, the information is usually found to preload the spring. If the circulatory weakness is still not resolved to this point, a major intervention must be made and that means: The tub must be down!
